April 7th 2009 marks the start of the 15th anniversary of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda where an estimated 1 million women, men and children were murdered in 100 days because they were Tutsis. Hutus that opposed the radical government were also killed. The world turned a blind eye and failed to protect people from destruction.

What do you remember most about 1994?

Watching that new show called 'Friends' for the first time? Kurt Cobain's suicide? Listening to 'Enter the Wu Tang' on loop?

Or that 1 million Rwandans were murdered over a 100 day period in one of the most horrific chapters in recorded history?

That's 6 people a minute. Every minute. For 100 days straight.

Public figures and celebrities including Samuel L. Jackson, Sandra Bullock and Natalie Portman are joining Rwandans to remember the victims and express support for the survivors in a hundred day event which began in the national stadium in Rwanda?s capital Kigali in the evening of 7th April, as part of the official commemoration of the genocide.

Ten thousands candles were lit in the shape of the memorial flame in Rwanda with the words ?hope? in three languages: Kinyarwandan, English and French.  The films of public figures and celebrities on the website http://www.candlesforrwanda.org were projected on a large screen while 500 young survivors lit the candles.   Music written by Rwandan and East African artists formed part of this powerful ceremony.

During the hundred days from April 7th to July 16th many more public figures from around the world will participate in this meaningful event.

You too can take part. Candles for Rwanda is a project that raises money to help those who survived the genocide. If you would like to light a candle in support for those who survived the genocide go to http://www.candlesforrwanda.org/donate

The lives of the three survivors in this short film were transformed by just a little support.  Candles for Rwanda wants to change the lives of thousands more like them.
