Animals have mysterious instincts that baffle many scientists. Scientists have theories but no certain knowledge to explain instincts. I sometimes wonder if the dinosaurs received any warning that the world was changing and they needed to do something in order to survive. Did God or some Celestial Intelligence give them a warning that a new Ice Age was forming or that a meteorite was on its way? Did some, like the birds, know to migrate to safer areas and others contentedly continue to live as they always had and as a result, die?
As far as man goes, we are told the story of Noah and of his hearing voices and consequently doing the crazy thing of bankrupting his family to build a huge boat on dry land. All of the rest of the ?normal? people, who were not open to receiving inspiration, continued their lives until they drowned.
Today, we have other kinds of cataclysms. From 911 to financial collapse, from potential pandemics to global warming, most of us just want to put the covers back over our heads in the morning. Our world is changing at a faster and faster pace and we don?t like it. As the world changes and we stay static, we set ourselves up for failure just as surely as if we were dinosaurs or Noah?s neighbors. We need to set up a strategy where we change as the world changes and our success is assured. But first let?s talk about why we are so resistant to change. Perhaps if we know
why we are resistant, then we will find an inkling to the solution.
1. America is the most entertained society in the history of man. A great portion of our lives have been spent watching dramas of other people?s lives. TV, movies, books, and plays have all synthesized our brains to witness the fictional drama and then go home to bed and do nothing about the drama. This is the right thing to do because it is entertainment and fiction. Unfortunately, when it comes to our own dramas, we are unable to face reality and treat it much as a drama we saw in a movie. We go home to bed and do nothing about our challenges.
2. Our egos get in our way for taking responsibility for our problems. The alcoholic says his wife drove him to drink. The bad salesman says his territory is no good. The woman executive says there is a glass ceiling. Perhaps the man?s wife is a challenge, perhaps the territory is horrible, and perhaps there is a glass ceiling but if we use these challenges as excuses, then we will not make the changes we need to make to overcome these challenges. We give up and giving up is not a solution.
3. Putting the brain on hold because of tradition. Society?s way of group think or really non-thinking has held us back and hurt many businesses. ?Men do these jobs and women do those jobs.? ?This is the way it has always been done and if your way was of any value, then it would have been done that way.? ?It must be a bad idea because I have never seen it done.? Look to new ideas as a possible success evolution.
4. Not facing the realization that it is up to us to solve the problem NOW! ?If I wait then the problem may go away.? The gambler thinks that if she can just get another loan then she may make back all her losses. The parent thinks the child with bad grades, poor dress habits, and a surly attitude is just being a teenager and will outgrow this phase. The boss thinks the poor performing customer service department just needs more time. They all are refusing to face the problem. No action is often a form of failed action.
5. Happiness with the status quo. We refuse to change because we are happy with our life as we live it now. The executive that loses his job and does not change his budget to match the new financial reality may be in total denial. He may continue to overspend while not doing what he needs to do to find his next position. Sometimes we must sacrifice and get out of our comfort zone to solve our problems. We must be willing to live a different life style to match the current situation. Many bankruptcies have resulted from people refusing to change their life style or status quo.
6. Unwillingness to learn. With all change, rules change, information changes and we must learn about how to succeed in the new reality. Many people refused to learn about computers when they first came out. Some executives would have their secretaries do all the computer work. Even some politicians today refuse to use e-mail. But if we won?t learn, then we can?t change successfully. Be willing to learn and it will keep you successful and young.
The solution is easy. Implementing the solution is much more difficult. Here is a three prong solution that if followed will always result in success.
1. Be awake NOW! Know what is going on around you and don?t get caught up in society?s hypnotic reality. Live in the present and refuse to have regrets of the past and fear of the future. Do your own thinking and problem solving about your present. Remain sober, healthy, and thoughtful.
2. Face your current situation with the appropriate mindset. As Kenny Rogers says while singing about gambling: ?You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run.? Kenny is talking about mindsets for different situations and their resulting actions. If we are wide awake and in the now, then our mindset needs to be appropriate for the situation. Here is an example of a wrong mindset. A salesman who just broke all records is called into his boss?s office and told instead of a bonus and praise he will be training a new salesman to take over half of his territory. He is angry, feels unjustly punished, and is fearful about how to make his quota next year. He meets with his best friend for lunch and his friend tells him how he is having difficulty with his wife. The salesman tells his friend to take a stick and beat her. The friend says he loves his wife and could do no such thing. Obviously, the salesman has taken his mindset of anger from his meeting with his boss and transferred the mindset inappropriately to the situation with his friend and wife. Inappropriate action many times is a result of inappropriate mindsets.
3. Become impeccable at changing mindsets as situations change. When we get in a mental rut our mindsets tend to be habit and tradition. We really are not awake and thinking. It takes a real mental athlete to change mindsets as current situations change. Like an athlete we must be awake, sober, and ready for right action.
We are living in challenging times. Are we going to just sit back like the dinosaurs and Noah?s neighbors and hope things are going to get better? Or are we going to be fully awake, knowing all the facts, having the right mindset, and do something appropriate? Are we going to take right action?
To thrive we must be awake, thinking and doing.
