Do you ever wish that you had somebody to watch your baby while you were busying cleaning the house or washing the dog? Have you ever wished that you have someone to go to the gym with you? Or maybe you wished that you didn?t have to drive a gas guzzling car to the gym. Do you wish that you could build a book shelf without having to purchase all of the expensive tools? Don?t you wish you have someone to bring you dinner whenever you are sick in the bed? Do you wish you could stay at home and relax while you significant other talks politics with the neighbors? If so then a cohousing community might be for you.
A cohousing community is often referred to as a return to the best of small town communities. A cohousing community combines that autonomy of private dwelling and the advantages of shared resources and community living. The residents living in the community will own their own homes including all amenities but they share certain common areas. The cohousing community has been designed using shared facilities and physical design which has proved to help support and sustain community connection over a period of time. The cohousing community concept was created approximately forty years ago in Denmark. The first communities were created and developed to be able to provide people seeking a safe supportive living environment with multi generational housing.
What is Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community? The PGCC is a cohousing BC community that happens to be the first in Nanaimo?s first cohousing project. This particular cohousing BC community purchased over four acres of land at the 347 7th Street in Nanaimo. One the land there is an extensive green space that is home to natural flora and fauna as well as a seasonal pond and many heritage apple trees. The property in which the cohousing BC community is on is adjacent to a park along the salmon filled Chase River which provides many beautifully stunning views of Mount Benson.
This particular cohousing community will include a total of twenty five strata title units. Within the cohousing BC community they use a fee simple strata title ownership structure which means that each household owns their own homes with a share of the common facilities. There will be one, two and three bedroom units available within the cohousing BC community as well as three bedroom units with den units. This allows the cohousing BC community to accommodate to families as well as seniors and singles of all ages.
The cohousing BC community provides many common facilities including craft rooms, teen and children?s playrooms and woodworking shops. There are also guest rooms available for visitors. The community will place a strong emphasis on organic gardening. Decisions made within the community are made by owners that meet regularly. Decisions are made using a consensus based method. Decisions are made this way on the construction and design of the project.
