What exactly is cohousing and intentional housing? The concept of cohousing began about forty years ago in Denmark. Intentional housing is often referred to as a return to the best of the small town community. Residents of one of these communities often share resources within their community. Most of the time residents will own their own homes as well as all amenities but they share the common areas. Residents will often share facilities. The physical design of the community and the shared facilities will help support and sustain a community connection over time. The first intentional housing communities were developed to provide multi generational housing for those seeking a safe and supportive living environment.
Do you own your own house while living in a cohousing community? The method of ownership often varies depending on which community you are living in however the most common is the fee simple strata title ownership structure. In this type of situation each household will own their own home together as well as a share of the common facilities. Most of the time intentional housing communities do not has religious or political affiliations. Most communities have residents with diverse ages, backgrounds and family types that are capable of sustaining both socially and environmentally. The emphasis of one of these communities is on the quality of life.
There are a number of intentional housing communities all across the world including the Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community. This is the first co-housing community on the newly formed Nanaimo co-housing project. The community purchase over three acres of land at the 347 7th Street in Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. The land is filled with green space including natural flora and fauna. There is also a seasonal pond and heritage apple tears on the land. The property is very close to a park along the salmon connected to the Chase River with provides excellent and stunning views of Mount Benson.
The Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community will have twenty five strata title units. There will be one bedroom units, two bedroom units, three bedroom units, and three bedroom units plus den units that will help accommodate families as well as seniors and singles of all ages. You hear about common facilities a lot in this article so what exactly are they? The PGCC will have a common house in the center along with an atrium and pedestrian walkway that leads to all units. These resources are to be used for by all residents freely. All of this space is for all residents to use and enjoy equally.
The Pacific Gardens Cohousing Community will include a large kitchen across from the dining hall and activity hall. Residents can attend community meals here whenever they want. There are a number of plans included for this particular intentional housing community including plans for rooms such as a craft room, woodworking shop, teen and children?s? play rooms. The community will put a strong emphasis on organic gardening. Owners will meet on a regular basis in order to make consensus based decisions regarding to the construction and design of the project. This method is used to help put everyone on an equal foots as well as helping to build a powerfully dynamic and sustaining community.
