At first glance one may not be too attracted by the idea of donating their car. Actually when you look into it there are many reasons that may entice you to do so. This includes but is not limited to gaining tax benefits, participating in charity and saving bundles of time. Even if your vehicle is not worth much it will still help to raise funds for a charitable organization.

The IRS is bound by law to give a tax refund on donation cars. This amount can be as high as $500. This is one of the biggest attractions that causes people to give up their unused cars for donation. Getting started with the process is extremely easy. All you have to do is fill out a car donation form where you enter some basic information regarding your vehicle from the website of a car donation company. You will also have the opportunity to choose the beneficiary charity organization from the panel charities that are part of the particular donation company?s listings.

The Car donation company will then give you a receipt which can be used to get the tax rebate from the IRS. Hence car donation gives you a guaranteed rebate worth five hundred dollars or more in any case. Consider the fact that this is a complete hassle free way of getting rid of your car while earning a handsome amount and participating in charity all at the same time. You don?t have to run ads in the newspaper and have people come over to test your ride. Nor do you have to get your vehicle repaired in order to be able to sell it. Similarly if you were to participate in a trade in you would have to go through so much hassle as compared to car donation programs.

The vehicle can either directly go to the charity organization. Most car donation companies however sell the vehicle and give a certain percentage of the proceedings to the charity organization that you have selected. In case the charity decides to make use of the car then you may able to receive the market value of the vehicle. However when you go through the middle men the chances are that the car will be auctioned off and you will be receiving a sizable tax break.

In order to ensure that the charity organization benefits big time from your car donation you need to find a Donate car program initiated by a reputable company. Carshelpingamerica.org for example provides this middle man service and is known for its ability to sell donated cars for great prices in the market. This automatically translates as higher funds for the charities. Furthermore they have a nominal fee as compared to other organizations which is complimented by a high percentage of the proceedings that are to go to the charity organization. Rest assured the fee is not an additional cost that you have to incur rather it is taken from the proceedings received from the sale off the car.

Former Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona is accompanied by his wife Deborah as Carona arrives for sentencing by U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford in Santa Ana Monday. The judge sentenced Carona 66 months in federal prison and fined him $125,000. Carona could have received anything from probation to 20 years in prison. U.S. Attorneys had ask judge Guilford to sentence Carona to at least 9 years.

In a bid for leniency the former Sheriff said he regrets the words he used on a secret recording that led to his witness tampering conviction but did not take any responsibility for illegally trying to influence the grand jury testimony of his former assistant Don Haidl.

Carona is charged with asking on Haidl to withhold information about cash and gifts during a conversation at a Newport Beach restaurant in August 2007. Haidl by than had cut a deal with the feds and was cooperating by using a federal hidden microphone. It showed Carona using the F word often plotting to get their testimonies straight.

In a letter filed Friday along with dozens of others from his wife, son and a cross-section of supporters who advocate probation, Carona tells U.S. District Judge Andrew J. Guilford that on the advice of his attorneys he cannot speak about the witness tampering charge.

"I want you to know, though, how sorry I am that I permitted myself to be drawn into that conversation with Don Haidl," Carona wrote. "When Don started talking the way he did . . . I should have gotten up and walked out of the restaurant. I wish more than anything I had done that."

Carona's letter was one of 71 filed by people such as the mother of 5-year-old murder victim Samantha Runnion and the head of a popular vodka distillery. Many of his supporters strike a similar theme, asking the judge to consider Carona's entire public service record, especially the good he has done for at-risk and missing children. Some took the media and prosecutors to task, saying they had twisted the facts at the expense of justice.

The most passionate pleas came from his wife Deborah Carona and son Matthew, 18.

"Please don't destroy us any more. Enough is enough," Carona's wife urged the judge, recounting the financial, psychological and physical toll already caused by a trial that she said was turned into a "salacious soap opera" by prosecutors. "I pray that this terror will end."

"I could honestly not ask for any more of a father and without him in my life I would fall. I feel he is my rock that I am built upon and without him I would crumble," the teenager wrote. "I ask you from the bottom of my heart to see the truth and understand that my dad is not the man that the prosecution tried to portray him as during the trial."

Probation officers recommended Carona serve 6 1/2 years in prison.

In his letter, Carona said that he has been humiliated, humbled and financially ruined by the case.

Being prepared for all types of emergencies should be a priority for everyone in the U.S. With more threats than ever before, we know that any number of events can be right around the corner. But lately its completely understandable that many of us probably have our mind on economic worries at the very least. But knowing what we do know about the swine Flu break out, it might be a good time for us to consider investing in our own safety just in case.

As of now there are over 1,000 deaths in the country of Mexico. Granted we are not Mexico, and we do have an outstanding heads up on the current situation, that doesnt mean that we shouldnt take precaution anyways.

But a bigger point can be made - We should be ready for any other crisis that could happen, even if the Swine Flu stays contained.

Swine Flu preparation should be just one state of preparation we should be concerned with. I would say that this Swine Flu problem should be at the least, a wake up call. Preparing for this could end up saving us in the future. If we take action now, and nothing too serious comes of the Swine Flu virus, than we will still be prepared for any future occurences that could happen.

But just because we have caught this virus earlier than Mexico, doesnt mean its going to be O.K. Honestly, we are right nesxt door to the country, and we havnt done a great job of keeping Mexican immigrants out of our country in the past. And it only takes 1 unknowing victim to spread the Swine Flu virus to a large group of unsuspecting colleagues , classmates, or total strangers in a supermarket.

I am definitely not trying to be someone that tries to scare people, but whenever a society takes something like this too lightly , things can spiral out of control in the blink of an eye. It is our responsibility to take stock of situations like these and make honest assesments.

In the coming weeks we will know for sure if the Swine Flu will become epidemic, pandemic, or nothing more than a slight outbreak. I hope that its the latter. But I really hope that we are all prepared for anything and everything.

by Kurt DuNard The Exceptional Life Coach

Animals have mysterious instincts that baffle many scientists. Scientists have theories but no certain knowledge to explain instincts. I sometimes wonder if the dinosaurs received any warning that the world was changing and they needed to do something in order to survive. Did God or some Celestial Intelligence give them a warning that a new Ice Age was forming or that a meteorite was on its way? Did some, like the birds, know to migrate to safer areas and others contentedly continue to live as they always had and as a result, die?

As far as man goes, we are told the story of Noah and of his hearing voices and consequently doing the crazy thing of bankrupting his family to build a huge boat on dry land. All of the rest of the ?normal? people, who were not open to receiving inspiration, continued their lives until they drowned.

Today, we have other kinds of cataclysms. From 911 to financial collapse, from potential pandemics to global warming, most of us just want to put the covers back over our heads in the morning. Our world is changing at a faster and faster pace and we don?t like it. As the world changes and we stay static, we set ourselves up for failure just as surely as if we were dinosaurs or Noah?s neighbors. We need to set up a strategy where we change as the world changes and our success is assured. But first let?s talk about why we are so resistant to change. Perhaps if we know

why we are resistant, then we will find an inkling to the solution.

Why we are paralyzed to change

1.  America is the most entertained society in the history of man. A great portion of our lives have been spent watching dramas of other people?s lives. TV, movies, books, and plays have all synthesized our brains to witness the fictional drama and then go home to bed and do nothing about the drama. This is the right thing to do because it is entertainment and fiction. Unfortunately, when it comes to our own dramas, we are unable to face reality and treat it much as a drama we saw in a movie. We go home to bed and do nothing about our challenges.

2.  Our egos get in our way for taking responsibility for our problems. The alcoholic says his wife drove him to drink. The bad salesman says his territory is no good. The woman executive says there is a glass ceiling. Perhaps the man?s wife is a challenge, perhaps the territory is horrible, and perhaps there is a glass ceiling but if we use these challenges as excuses, then we will not make the changes we need to make to overcome these challenges. We give up and giving up is not a solution.

3.  Putting the brain on hold because of tradition. Society?s way of group think or really non-thinking has held us back and hurt many businesses. ?Men do these jobs and women do those jobs.? ?This is the way it has always been done and if your way was of any value, then it would have been done that way.? ?It must be a bad idea because I have never seen it done.? Look to new ideas as a possible success evolution.

4.  Not facing the realization that it is up to us to solve the problem NOW! ?If I wait then the problem may go away.? The gambler thinks that if she can just get another loan then she may make back all her losses. The parent thinks the child with bad grades, poor dress habits, and a surly attitude is just being a teenager and will outgrow this phase. The boss thinks the poor performing customer service department just needs more time. They all are refusing to face the problem. No action is often a form of failed action.

5.  Happiness with the status quo. We refuse to change because we are happy with our life as we live it now. The executive that loses his job and does not change his budget to match the new financial reality may be in total denial. He may continue to overspend while not doing what he needs to do to find his next position. Sometimes we must sacrifice and get out of our comfort zone to solve our problems. We must be willing to live a different life style to match the current situation. Many bankruptcies have resulted from people refusing to change their life style or status quo.

6.  Unwillingness to learn. With all change, rules change, information changes and we must learn about how to succeed in the new reality. Many people refused to learn about computers when they first came out. Some executives would have their secretaries do all the computer work. Even some politicians today refuse to use e-mail. But if we won?t learn, then we can?t change successfully. Be willing to learn and it will keep you successful and young.

The three legged stool to successful change

The solution is easy. Implementing the solution is much more difficult. Here is a three prong solution that if followed will always result in success.

1.  Be awake NOW! Know what is going on around you and don?t get caught up in society?s hypnotic reality. Live in the present and refuse to have regrets of the past and fear of the future. Do your own thinking and problem solving about your present. Remain sober, healthy, and thoughtful.

2.  Face your current situation with the appropriate mindset. As Kenny Rogers says while singing about gambling: ?You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, Know when to walk away and know when to run.? Kenny is talking about mindsets for different situations and their resulting actions. If we are wide awake and in the now, then our mindset needs to be appropriate for the situation. Here is an example of a wrong mindset. A salesman who just broke all records is called into his boss?s office and told instead of a bonus and praise he will be training a new salesman to take over half of his territory. He is angry, feels unjustly punished, and is fearful about how to make his quota next year. He meets with his best friend for lunch and his friend tells him how he is having difficulty with his wife. The salesman tells his friend to take a stick and beat her. The friend says he loves his wife and could do no such thing. Obviously, the salesman has taken his mindset of anger from his meeting with his boss and transferred the mindset inappropriately to the situation with his friend and wife. Inappropriate action many times is a result of inappropriate mindsets.

3.  Become impeccable at changing mindsets as situations change. When we get in a mental rut our mindsets tend to be habit and tradition. We really are not awake and thinking. It takes a real mental athlete to change mindsets as current situations change. Like an athlete we must be awake, sober, and ready for right action.

We are living in challenging times. Are we going to just sit back like the dinosaurs and Noah?s neighbors and hope things are going to get better? Or are we going to be fully awake, knowing all the facts, having the right mindset, and do something appropriate? Are we going to take right action?

To thrive we must be awake, thinking and doing.
